Personal Stories Diversify Feminism in Guatemala

Latin America has a long history of strong social and feminist movements marked by high levels of collaboration on the regional level. However, gender, sexuality and transfeminism are challenging topics. Trans and non-trans feminists have not had the space to engage in intensive conversations or to simply get to know one another. So in October 2010, grantee partner Mulabi–Espacio Latinoamericano de Sexualidades y Derechos, an organization that addresses issues of sexuality and rights through empowerment and collective transformation, convened more than 30 trans and non-trans feminist activists from across the region for Construyendonos II (Constructing Ourselves). Held in Guatemala, the two-day dialogue made it possible to exchange personal stories and examine long-held beliefs, ultimately breaking through stereotypes and uncovering personal and political common ground...[more in English] [Una versión en español]

Growing isolation and eroding self-worth are everyday realities for someone experiencing domestic violence. Turning to the authorities might lead to even more violence if you are undocumented, involved in sex work, a person of color, queer or transgender.
